Presence and Instant Messaging in SIP
Published in Radhika Ranjan Roy, Handbook on Session Initiation Protocol, 2018
Presence is the key functionality that helps solve the above problems for real-time communications in SIP through publications, subscriptions, and notifications about the detailed information about the user, for example, how and when the user will be present for communications in real time. In this case, a user who publishes their presence information for willingness to communicate in real time is termed as the presentity. Presence, also known as presence information, conveys the ability and willingness of a user to communicate across a set of devices. Request for Comment (RFC) 2778 defines a model and terminology for describing systems that provide presence information. In that model, a presence service is a system that accepts, stores, and distributes presence information to interested parties, called watchers. A presence protocol is a protocol for providing a presence service over the Internet or any Internet Protocol network. RFC 3856 extends SIP for proving the presence service, while RFC 3857 defines a SIP event package for the watcher.

What does it mean to be “presence-enabled”? The basic concept is to show availability of an entity in an appropriate venue. Some modern applications aggregate presence information about all of a person’s various connections. For communication devices such as phones and applications such as IM, presence information is often built into the device itself. For less communication-centric applications, such as a document or web page, presence may be gathered by means of a web services API or channeled through a presence daemon. Providing presence data through as many avenues as possible is in large measure the responsibility of a presence engine, as described below.
