HGIS

A historical geographic information system (HGIS) is a type of geographic information system that is capable of displaying, storing, and analyzing data related to past geographies and tracking changes over time. An important type of GIS that has practical applications in several domains (i.e., environmental sciences, military, computer assisted cartography, etc.) is the Historical Geographic Information System (also written as Historical GIS or HGIS). An HGIS is a geographic information system that may display, store and analyze data of past geographies and track changes in time [990]. The Google Earth interactive web maps are the GIS infrastructure utilized for the China Historical GIS [116].

The study utilized different datasets pertaining to the 2012–2016 period that were aggregated to obtain the analysis dataset. The individual datasets included the highway rail crossing inventory dataset and railroad casualties (Form 6180.55A) obtained from FRA, the U.S. railroad information, census data and county boundaries obtained from U.S. Census Bureau and National Historical Geographic Information System, were merged together using unique county FIPS codes [31,32].
