Frame Relay is a high-speed WAN protocol that executes the OSI model’s physical and data link layers. It was designed and created for interfaces of ISDN. It is also utilized today on many additional network interfaces. Frame Relay is frequently referred to as a “streamlined” form of the X.25 protocol, as it provides several robust features of X.25, such as windowing and data retransmission. The primary reason is that the Frame Relay often uses facilities of WAN that provide more dependable connection services and minimize unreliability which is not plausible characteristics of the late 1970s and initial 1980s typical platforms of X.25 WANs.
