Several bit rates are available for the network, the most adopted being in the range from 50 kbps to 1 Mbps (the latter value represents the maximum allowable bit rate according to the CAN specifications). The maximum extension of a CAN network depends directly on the bit rate. The exact relation between these two quantities also involves parameters such as delays introduced by transceivers and optocouplers. Generally speaking, the mathematical product between the length of the bus and the bit rate has to be approximately constant. For example, the maximum extension allowed for a 500 kbps network is about 100 m, and increases up to about 500 m when a bit rate of 125 kbps is considered.

Bit rate refers to the speed at which binary pieces of information (bits) are transmitted on a particular network. The raw bit rate of a network generally refers to the actual speed of transmission of bits on the network. The effective bit rate—or throughput—generally refers to the speed at which user information is transmitted. This number is less than or equal to the raw bit rate, depending on what percentage of the bits transmitted is used for carrying user information. The bits not carrying user information are overhead, used to carry protocol, timing, or other network information.

Bandwidth is the difference between the upper and lower cut-off frequencies of a communication channel. The bandwidth of the signal is essentially the difference between the maximum frequency and the minimum frequency of the signal transmitted channel. In digital transmission, the term bit rate is often used to express the capacity (which some books refer to as bandwidth) of a channel. The bit rate is measured in bits per second (bps). The frequency bands of some important wireless communications are given in Table 4.1.

The rate-constrained quantizer is designed to minimize MSE distortion (maximize SQNR) for the desired bit rate, as opposed to distortion-constrained quantizer where the design goal was to minimize MSE distortion, without taking care about the bit rate. The bit rate is chosen to be lower than the optimal distortion-constrained quantizer, making the rate-constrained quantizer suboptimal in the minimal MSE sense, but enabling savings in bit rate with minimal loss in SQNR.
