Wireless Coding and Modulation
Published in Mahbub Hassan, Wireless and Mobile Networking, 2022
The following terminology is often used to explain the coding of digital data on the carrier signal: Symbol is the smallest element of a signal with a given amplitude, frequency, and phase that can be detected. Shorter symbol duration means that more signal elements carrying bits can be transmitted per second, and vice versa. Baud rate refers to the number of symbols that can be transmitted per second. It is the inverse of symbol duration and hence, sometimes referred to as the symbol rate. It is also called the modulation rate because this is how fast the property of the signal, i.e., its amplitude, frequency, or phase, can be changed or modulated.

The term baud is used to define the rate of information transmission in terms of signal rate per second. If we limit the case to the usual binary bits described earlier with only two states, 0 and 1, then baud is equivalent to bits-per-second. If the case is further limited to using ASCII code where 10 or 11 bits define a character, we can easily convert bauds to characters-per-second by dividing baud rate by 10 or 11 bits per character.

The number of symbols per second that is either transmitted or received in serial devices, where a symbol may have one or more bits. Baud is the speed of serial data transmission. The baud rate must be less than or equal to the rated speed of digital transmission that can be accepted by both the send and receive devices. Serial connections use RS-232 or RS-485 serial interfaces, cables, and connectors.

Baud rate is a measure of the signal transmission rate. The baud rate is the speed at which data are sent through a communication channel. When describing devices that employ serial transmission, the term ‘baud rate’ is frequently used. The baud rate is related to the transmission distance of the serial port. The farther the distance is, the lower the baud rate is. The baud rate is set at 38,400 bps.
