IOCG

IOCG stands for "iron-oxide copper gold" and refers to a type of mineral deposit that contains iron oxide, copper, and gold. These deposits are often found in regions with high levels of fluid/melt activity originating from the deep crust and mantle. Iron-oxide copper gold uranium (IOCG-U) deposits, such as the world-class Olympic Dam ore body on the Gawler Craton in south-central Australia, are characterised by fluid/melt that originated in the deep crust and mantle. Reflection seismic and MT surveys have revealed zones of low seismic reflectivity in the upper crust, and zones of low electrical resistivity and seismic transparency in the lower crust that are spatially correlated with Olympic Dam and two other significant IOCG-U occurrences (Heinson et al., 2018). It is postulated that these zones represent pathways of metalliferous fluids from the mantle and lower crustal sources to ‘traps’ in the upper crust. An example of MT mapping of the Yilgarn Craton is shown in Figure 7.5.

IOCG deposits host magmato-hydrothermal mineralization, where Au and Cu are of economic importance. This deposit primarily comprises Fe, Cu along with Ag, U, REE, Bi, Co, Nb, and P, etc. As the economic abundance of Pb and Zn is less in IOCG deposits, such types of deposits are less significant as compared to other deposits (Mudd, Jowitt and Werner 2017).
