Except that the cold East Greenland Current passes through the strait and carries icebergs south into the North Atlantic. The icebergs are the only danger in the path of oil tankers in the straits, but we are far from the Titanic days, so the danger is minimal.

In addition to the dense water overflow, the East Greenland Current carries cold and less saline surface waters from the Arctic to the North Atlantic through the Denmark Strait. The model results show a net, southward volume transport of water masses with a density σθ < 27.8 of 0.9 Sv, on average during the period 1993–2016 (Figure 3.2.3(c). The volume transport in 2016 is comparable to recent years and to the long-term average. Few observation-based estimates of the volume transport carried by the East Greenland Current exist, and especially so for extended time periods. A densely-sampling mooring array deployed in 2011–2012 indicates a net southward volume transport of ∼2 Sv, when calculating for water masses with a density σθ < 27.8 (de Steur et al. 2017).
