Building diagnostics is the branch of Building Pathology that deals with methodologies and techniques for determining the condition, internal environment and performance of property. It also covers the investigation and commissioning of services within buildings (House and Kelly 2000; Odom and Dubose 2002). It requires the practitioner to adopt a systematic approach and exercise professional judgment when investigating building problems such as defects, poor indoor air quality and lack of performance.

The condition of buildings is usually managed by facility managers (FM) whose goal is to make decisions to ensure the optimal use of buildings and systems, and the most appropriate conditions for occupants (Watt, 2007). The interface between building performance and FM is building diagnostics (Douglas, 1996). Building diagnostics is the systematic study and evaluation of building condition through data collection and measurement of physical parameters. It helps facility managers to understand how to manage the vast building stock (Bortolini & Forcada, 2018). Facility managers need consequence analysis and tools to monitor and assess building condition, to support them in their critical and challenging task (Abdallah & El-rayes, 2016; Grussing & Liu, 2014).
