Water Chemistry
Published in Frank R. Spellman, The Science of Water, 2020
As stated previously, a chemical equation tells what elements and compounds are present before and after a chemical reaction. Sulfuric acid poured over zinc will cause the release of hydrogen and the formation of zinc sulfate. This is shown by the following equation:Zn+H2SO4→ ZnSO4+H2

The third pattern in Figure 8 showed the increasing trend of water pollution from the Co region to EP regions for Sulfate and Zinc. Sulfate can cause dehydration and diarrhea in babies and adults. A safety measure of not exceeding 200 mg/L should be maintained for drinking and preparation of food (WHO 2004). High concentrations of Zinc occur as a result of corrosion in pipes fittings. Consumption of more than 500 mg of Zinc sulfate through the drinking water causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, sometimes accompanied by bleeding and abdominal cramps (WHO 2003). The extreme polluted regions (ST1 and ST5 sites) are situated under the highly influenced point source pollution discharges which worsen the level of pollution than the other sites.

Zinc sulfate (ZnSO4. 7H2O) with 99% purity having a molecular weight of 287.54 g/mol was used in this study as the depressant for zinc sulfide. Lime (CaO) was used to regulate the pH, acting as the depressant for iron sulfide gangues.[30] Copper sulfate (CuSO4.5H2O), with 249.68 g/mol molecular weight, was used as a source of copper ions to activate zinc ores. SIPX was used as a collector for the ease of zinc flotation. MIBC was introduced as frother throughout the study. These reagents were prepared on a daily basis for experimental works.
