The zinc-carbon battery is the cheapest available battery. It has a zinc negative electrode, a manganese dioxide positive electrode and the electrolyte is a solution of ammonium chloride. They are available in the same range of sizes as the alkaline batteries shown inFig. 2.14, AAA, AA, C, D and PP3 having an emf of 1.5 V. This is the most popular cell for low-current use such as torches. When the chemical reaction is exhausted the battery must be replaced.

Considering a zinc-carbon battery, which has a zinc metal body (Zn) as its anode, a cathode made of manganese dioxide (MnO2) and an acidic electrolyte made of a paste of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride dissolved in water. The half cell and overall reactions and the corresponding cell potentials may be summarized as follows: Zn(s)→Zn2+(aq)+2e−[e°=−0.763V],2NH4+(aq)+2MnO2(s)+2e−→Mn2O3(s)+H2O(l)+2NH3(aq)+2Cl−[e°=0.50V],

Figure 5a shows the 1-D tomography image of a new 1.5-V zinc-carbon battery exposed to a neutron beam as in the setup in Fig. 2b, while Fig. 5b shows the 1-D tomography of a discharged 0.9-V zinc-carbon battery showing the presence of hydrogen from NH4 and MnO2 reaction, indicated by the light blue that spreads in a wider area.1,5
