VRLA Battery: The acronym VRLA stands for Valve Regulated Lead-Acid battery The VRLA battery is also known as a Sealed Lead Acid (SLA), battery or the Maintenance Free Battery. Even though the VRLA batteries do not require constant maintenance, their characterization as “Maintenance Free” is somewhat of a misnomer. The VRLA batteries still require cleaning and regular functional testing. The VRLA batteries are widely used in large portable electrical devices, and off-grid power systems; where large amounts of storage are needed. The VRLA batteries, in such applications, in some cases, offer a lower cost alternative as compared to the Li-Ion batteries. As implicit from its classification in the secondary battery category, the VRLA or SLA battery is rechargeable. The VRLA or SLA batteries can be sub-classified further as: Sealed VR Wet Cell BatteriesAGM BatteriesGel Batteries

Maintenance-free lead-acid batteries are sealed but they have a pressure-relief valve that vents hydrogen gas when the internal pressure reaches a certain threshold. These are called valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLA) or, more commonly, maintenance-free batteries.

The battery type of the system is Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) Gel. This type provides reliability has low maintenance cost and long life (Satpathy and Pamuru 2021). One good alternative is to replace the lead-based batteries of the system with lithium-ion batteries, which have a very high energy density (May, Davidson, and Monahov 2018). Additionally, in spite of the higher initial cost of lithium-ion batteries, the total cost of ownership is considered less than the lead acid when taking into account lifetime and performance (ReLi3on Battery 2018).
