Anti-miRNA oligonucleotides (AMO) designed to reduce levels of a specific miRNA often use chemically stable RNA analogs to avoid RNA degradation. RNA can be readily degraded by endogenous RNases though deprotonation of 2’-OH group on sugar ring leading to RNA hydrolysis. The RNA degradation can be inhibited by replacing the 2’-OH group with a chemically inert group, such as 2′-O-methyl-(2′-O-Me)-oligonucleotides, 2′-O-methoxyethyl-oligonucleotides (2′-O-MOE) and 2’ fluoride derivatives (2′-F) (Fisher et al., 1993).

At the same time, applications of trivalent lanthanoid complexes as contrast agents for NMR imaging [5], stains for fluorescence imaging [6], responsive luminescent systems [7], catalysts for specific cleavage of RNA hydrolysis [8], or as active agents in cancer radiotherapy [9] have prompted considerable interest in lanthanoid coordination chemistry.
