Urban Water Quality Index of the Commercial Capital City of Bangladesh
Published in Uday Chatterjee, Arindam Biswas, Jenia Mukherjee, Sushobhan Majumdar, Advances in Urbanism, Smart Cities, and Sustainability, 2022
Whereas 38% of the demand of water for city dwellers is fulfilled by WASA (CWASA, 2017), the dwellers must use the surface water for household purposes against their wish. In this issue, the study prescribes that dwellers should use effective mechanisms to purify surface water before household purposes. Basically, boiling, filtering (manually and digitally), and potassium alum [KAl (SO4)2.12H2O] (fitcary), a water purification tablet used for purification of water, have been recommended. The mentioned techniques would reduce the risks of waterborne diseases by the users from UWBs.

The flotation method has been matured for mineral processing, especially in the treatment of fine rare earth industrial minerals [39,53,54]. Ren et al. studied separating bastnaesite from monazite using selective flotation while using benzoic acid and potassium alum as the collector and depressant, respectively [55]. Yu et al. found that 1,4-benzoyl hydroxamic acid (PDHA) can be used as both a collector and flocculant, which can significantly improve the recovery of ultrafine rare earth minerals [56]. Although flotation has been applied to separate REEs-mineral ore, there is limited information on selectively enriching REEs from coal-based feeds.

Potassium alum is the hydrated form of potassium aluminium sulfate with the chemical formula K Al (SO4)2·12H2O. Potassium alum is a fine white powder that was used as the mordant. Ethanol has been collected from the Department of Biotechnology for the required purpose. Ethanol with the chemical formula C2H5OH is volatile, flammable, colourless liquid with a slight characteristic odour.
