The administrative claims dataset is the first option for high utilizer studies because of its high coverage across all health care settings. Because payment for health care services typically generates an administrative claim, any health care event that incurs costs will exist in administrative claims datasets. Usually administrative claim datasets are separate by payer programs (public or private insurance) and contain the following parts: Enrollment: Enrollment records usually contain patient-level data, such as enrollees’ demographics, insurance status, enrollment dates, disability status, and insurance coverage, among others.Encounter: A health care encounter is a record of an interaction between the patient and the health care provider. As event-level data, it contains the health care service provider’s information, the date of service, the reason of service (diagnosis code), service type (e.g., inpatient, outpatient), the content of service (procedure code), and billing information.Pharmacy claims: The pharmacy vendor generates a pharmacy claim when the patient gets medication. The claim will contain the pharmacy vendor information, the prescriber information, drug type (pharmaceutical code) and amount, date of dispensing, and billing information.

There was a major meningitis outbreak that was attributed to the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Massachusetts in 2012. There were reports of over 800 individuals sickened with meningitis and 76 deaths. This outbreak of meningitis affected multiple states and it was investigated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the state and local health departments. As a result, it was determined that the outbreak was linked to a contaminated steroid injection produced by NECC. This product was manufactured by NECC, which is designated as a compounding pharmacy. This company is only authorized to create specific formulations of drugs to meet the needs of individual patients and in response to individual prescriptions (Moldenhauer, 2017).

In conclusion, we have shown that pharmacy technicians involved in the compounding of chemotherapy and cleaning personnel involved in the cleaning of oncology wards and pharmacy premises were sufficiently protected against occupational exposure in our study. The pharmacy technicians involved in pre- and post-compounding activities, however, are not protected as adequately when they do not wear gloves. For this category of activities, improvement of practices is advised.
