On rare occasions white paint is manufactured with an optical brightener for the same reason that white textile is treated this way. When that happens, the fluorescent mini-tufts may become overwhelmed by the background brightness and the experiment will be ruined. It is prudent to keep this in mind when setting up a new application. A simple test with a hand held ultraviolet lamp should be sufficient to test for fluorescence of the paint pigment.
