Nitrofuran is a type of antibiotic within the antibiotics class that is characterized by having a nitro group at position 5 of a furan ring. Nitrofuran antibiotic drugs, such as furazolidone and nitrofurazone, were previously widely used in food animal production. Within the antibiotics class, nitrofurans are characterized by having a nitro group at position 5 of a furan ring [4]. Furaltadone, nitrofurantoin, nitrofurazone, and furazolidone are examples of important members of this group [5]. Nitrofurans have their highest use for veterinary purposes (food and medicine), being commonly used in aquaculture to prevent and treat gastrointestinal infections; they are also used as food supplements for humans [6,7].
