The reaction proceeds via a benzyne intermediate. The amide base deprotonates the ortho- proton to give carbanion A. Loss of chloride in leads to the triple bond in benzyne. Benzyne is very reactive with nucleophiles and the amide anion adds to the triple bond to form a new carbanion (B), which reacts with the ammonia solvent in an acid–base reaction to give aniline.

Due to the increased concentration of C2H2, the first ring of PAHs has already started to form behind the newly generated Mach stem. During the process of increasing the temperature to decreasing and then increasing again, a benzene ring→hydrocarbons→benzene ring transition is carried out. At the same time, C6H2 and H2 are reduced by the reaction C6H2+H2→C-C6H4 to form benzyne. The prerequisite components are provided for the further formation of fluoranthene.
