Some attempts were made toward selective separation of cesium by use of liquid membranes with a crown ether as the carrier. For the supported liquid-membranes (SLM) technique, crown ether n-decylbenzo-21-crown-7 was recently found to be the most appropriate.20 Even with this compound, cesium cannot be quantitatively removed owing to the competition of the very high content of sodium in the waste solution.

Fluorinated alcohols were actively studied as diluents for different mixtures of crown-ethers. Dodecafluoroheptyl alcohol was used as a diluent for phosphorylated crown-ether – bis-(meta, meta’-diphenylphosphinyl)dibenzo-21-crown-7 (DPDB21C7) and it’s mixture with dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (DCH18-C-6).[127] The formula of DPDB21C7 is shown in Figure 5.
