Vaginitis is characterized as any condition that predisposes women to vaginal symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, odor, irritation, itching, or burning (Paladine and Desai 2018). The most common vaginitis, which will be discussed in this book chapter, are bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) (Abdul-Aziz et al. 2019; Konadu et al. 2019; Rosca et al. 2019). It is important to highlight that the prevalence of these two vaginal infections is high globally, with a concomitant high economic burden (Denning et al. 2018; Peebles et al. 2019). Therefore, sustainable treatment strategies are urgently needed to reduce the burden. This chapter overviews the use of essential oils (EOs) as potential alternatives for the treatment of these two infections.

L. iners is usually the first lactobacillus that appears after treating bacterial vaginosis with metronidazole, and it is associated with bacterial vaginitis.[25] Thus, combating L. iners while retaining protective vaginal lactobacilli is of great significance for maintaining vaginal health. Therefore, L. iners was used as an indicator strain to investigate the antibacterial activity of L. gasseri H87 after freeze-drying and storage.
