As shown in figure 2, a 64-year-old patient, who had been diagnosed with gingival carcinoma of right upper jaw, underwent maxillary reconstruction. Using the information acquired from imaging diagnostics, a resection template was computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing fabricated with the titanium implant to provide one-step-reconstruction. During surgery, the tumour was exposed and the resection template was fitted to the surface of the affected bone in order to mark the resection margin. Then the segment of the affected bone that was inside the marked area was resected based on the contour of the individual resection template SLA model to ensure adequate tumor clearance. Then, the upper jaw was immediately reconstructed with the custom-made titanium prosthesis.

A retrospective propensity score-matched study of 149 patients undergoing low anterior resection showed an additional colon resection needed to be performed in 27.1% (n = 13) of the ICG cohort, 4 of whom went on to develop a symptomatic AL [17]. We also noted a change in proximal resection margin in 18.5% of our patients undergoing transanal total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, with one developing an AL [18]. These results suggest the importance of evaluating hypoperfusion leading to a more proximal well-perfused transection site, but may not be a panacea.
