Screening has been one of the cornerstones for decreasing cancer mortality for decades, particularly for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. The Pap test became standard care in the 1970 s and has resulted in a plummet in cervical cancer cases and deaths. However, with population-based screening comes the risk of detecting and subsequently treating what would otherwise be clinically insignificant disease. This risk has been clearly seen with prostate cancer screening, where overtreatment of indolent disease can leave many men impotent, incontinent, depressed, and/or anxious (Sanhu and Andriole, 2012).
