Lachman test

The Lachman test is a medical procedure used to assess the integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee joint. It involves the examiner stabilizing the thigh while applying a forward force to the lower leg, and observing the amount of anterior translation (forward movement) of the tibia relative to the femur. An antero-posterior (A/P) laxity test, such as the Lachman test, was simulated at each flexion angle by applying an A/P force and a moment to the tibia. In the absence of the muscle force, any external A/P force is resisted mainly by the cruciate ligaments of the knee (9–11). Anterior forces acting on the tibia are resisted mainly by the ACL and MCL and posterior forces by the PCL and LCL (9–11). When the ligaments are slack, tibial movement is unresisted. When the ligaments are stretched, the joint stiffness (external force required for small tibial displacements) is increased.

Verification of intactness of ACL is done by the Lachman test (S. Kim et al., 2021). In this test, the ATT of the tibia is observed in the supine position of the body when a 134 N (Trofa et al., 2020 and Wan et al., 2017) load is applied to the tibia in the anterior direction. The same is shown in Figure 4. In the present study, the Lachman test was simulated using the Finite Element analysis approach on healthy human knee joints of five subjects for statistical significance of the results. Finite Element models of one subject with healthy knee joints in full-extension position were considered.
