Keratoprosthesis (KPro) is a synthetic cornea that is designed to replace the central part of an opaque cornea. The Boston Keratoprosthesis is the most commonly used type of KPro. Material engineers in this field are urged to investigate how procedures and manipulation during CLET or COMET that rely on xenogeneic materials can be substituted. This will decrease the chance of disease transmittance or adverse reactions to the healthy tissue. In addition, new methods that use novel materials should aim for lower failures rate than the currently adopted procedures (30% for CLET and 50% for COMET to be unsuccessful). Patients with repeated failed procedures with CLET or penetrating keratoplasty have the option to use artificial cornea (Polisetti et al. 2013). Boston Keratoprosthesis is commonly used in these cases (Ahmad et al. 2016).

A treatment for the high-risk group of patients with corneal blindness is keratoprosthesis, where the diseased cornea is implanted with nonbiologic artificial cornea. An example of this is the Boston Keratoprosthesis, also known as KPro, which is the most widely used artificial cornea. Due to the device being exposed to the external environment, there exists a high risk of infection and other complications with keratoprosthesis [9].
