The sustained increase in registered genomic sequences showed that in many cases the data that they provide could not be enough to elucidate all the issues raised on microbial analysis (Zuñiga, Zaramela, and Zengler 2017). Since then, the omics were developed as a new area that integrates different data from the functional genome. Functional genomics means the attribution to useful biological information for each gene, improving the knowledge of how the different biological molecules contained within the cell combine to turn into a viable organism (Greenbaum et al. 2001). In this way, it is possible to understand an organism at a systemic level since omics involve many components of the functional genome.
Introduction to Biotechnology
Published in Firdos Alam Khan, Biotechnology Fundamentals, 2018
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that addresses biological problems by using computational techniques and makes possible the rapid organization and analysis of biological data. The field may also be referred to as computational biology and can be defined as “conceptualizing biology in terms of molecules and then applying informatics techniques to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large scale.” Bioinformatics plays a key role in various areas such as functional genomics, structural genomics, and proteomics. It also forms a key component in the biotechnology and drug discovery industries (Figure 1.7).
Glossary of scientific and technical terms in bioengineering and biological engineering
Published in Megh R. Goyal, Scientific and Technical Terms in Bioengineering and Biological Engineering, 2018
Functional genomics refers to the field of research, that aims to determine patterns of gene expression and interaction in the genome, based on the knowledge of extensive or complete genomic sequence of an organism.

The functional genomics research field concentrates on the genome features like the gene regulation activities. All the genes functioning of an organism are needed to be analyzed in a single experiment by performing RNA transcription, splicing by removing mRNA precursors and translation in the process of gene expression. The process of cellular systems, molecular networks and disease mechanisms are identified by performing such a gene expression data analysis. Genes that express similarly are found to be regulated frequently by suitable mechanisms.
