As an indicator of the probiotic activity, the number of viable Enterobacteria in different parts of the rat intestine was measured. Changes in detected amounts of Gram-negative Enterobacteria: such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella zonnei and Shigella fleexneri were considered as a measure of the antagonistic action strength of the preparations. For Enterobacteria quantification, suspended gut content was incubated on Petri dishes with Endo agar. The analyses were conducted for 15 days, every day starting from a day of antibiotic treatment. Finally, the amount of Lactobacillus cells attached to the rat intestinal epithelium was directly counted as described elsewhere [48].

The following is the list of steps in the preparation of the M-Endo preservative medium. Prepare M-Endo agar medium as described in Section 17.1.4.After cooling the medium to 45°C, aseptically add 3.84 g sodium benzoate per 1 of medium or 3.2 ml (12 g/100 ml) 12 percent sodium benzoate solution per 100 ml of medium.Mix well, and dispense into petri dishes as discussed in the preparation of M-Endo agar medium, see Section 17.1.4.
Tracers

This bacteria type is often used instead of Serratia marcescens as a tracer. The advantages are that it practically does not occur in natural waters. Only if E. coli has been detected in surface or groundwaters, is it indicated that there is impact due to warm-blooded faecal excretions. Thus, institutions that conduct water analyses often routinely analyse for E. coli. However, according to the pertinent ordinances, only the coli titer must be determined, i.e. the dilution volume, in which the bacteria with lactose fermentation is detectable. The determination of the colony count should be also determined in tracing tests by counting on ENDO-agar plates.

The enumeration of members of Enterobacteriaceae was carried out on ENDO agar (Merck, Germany). The typical red or fluorescent colonies surrounded by a red precipitate, grown after 24-hour incubation at 37°C, were confirmed by Gram-stain microscopy. The Analytical Profile Index API 10S (bioMerieux, France), as well as oxidase and catalase test, was used for detailed biochemical identification of the isolates.
