Skin. While shine or gloss per se may not necessarily be a desirable goal for skin conditioners, it may be an advantage for a facial moisturizer to leave the skin with a "healthy glow." We note that "healthy" appearance claims make more sense when directed to skin, since that is a living organ. Another visual indicator of the quality of skin condition is its color. Color is an important indicator because dry skin can take on a whitish or grayish cast as light is scattered by the loose scales of the stratum corneum; in blacks this gives skin an "ashy" appearance (2). Severely dry skin may have a reddened or cracked appearance, which serves as a visual cue to its poor condition.
Methods for Evaluating the Efficacy of Cosmetics Containing Glycerine

The application of an occlusive material to the skin surface will physically block the surface (at least partially) and lower TEWL for a time. This reduction in TEWL is traditionally taken as a direct measure of the moisturizing efficacy of the material. Occlusive moisturization is one of the best ways to treat dry skin (1), as it increases the water content from within and keeps it there. However, it should be realized that after several hours, increased hydration may actually cause TEWL to rise above the baseline value, because the diffusion coefficient of the skin increases with hydration (69).
