The relevance of choosing the right mix of type of integration, type of UAS operations, and airspace classification for safe and efficient operations among all aircraft in the NAS was demonstrated in this study. An implication of the findings in the current study is that preliminary steps to integrate UAS within the NAS could be attempted in highly controlled airspace such as Class B and Class C airspace. Further, fully autonomous UAS operations, segregated from other aircraft in highly controlled airspace, could provide first steps to support mixed-mode operations that can pave the way for future routine fully integrated solutions.
