Clinical Research
Published in Gary M. Matoren, The Clinical Research Process in the Pharmaceutical Industry, 2020
The clinical associate position is an entry level job for an inexperienced individual with a B.A. or other nonscientific degree. Alternatively, it may be an advanced level position for an experienced but non-degreed person. However, one or more years of college are required. The CA is engaged in multifacted activities and serves as technical and administrative assistant.
Making Measures, Setting Standards, and Rasch Regression

The following description of Rasch regression uses data from a survey developed by Karen Graham as part of her doctoral dissertation research. Currently, Karen is a clinical associate professor in a Physician Assistant (PA) education program at The University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. The published article (Graham & Beltyukova, 2015) received an article of the year award in the PA research field. That article reported on the set of 19 items labeled as Supportive Environment Scale. These items formed a meaningful linear variable measuring PA faculty intention to stay in academia and conceptually represented four clusters: relationships, autonomy, institutional support, and workload. We then conducted a secondary analysis of the data and used Rasch regression to determine that only 5 of these 19 items could be used to predict PA faculty intent to leave academia that served as the DV and was captured by a separate question on the survey (Beltyukova & Graham, 2017). Presented here is a more detailed and expanded Rasch regression analysis of the 19 items from the Supportive Environment Scale.

Although the domain of the learning environment obtained a good overall mean score, our findings highlight the variations across the eight health professions, and the areas that require attention. The clinical associate and oral hygiene curricula obtained the lowest scores (Figure 3). A possible explanation of these negative perceptions of students is that the clinical associate FOS is a relatively new and evolving programme that commenced in 2009 [58]. Nonetheless, these issues reflected in the low scores need to be addressed by the FHS. Although Wits University is one of the few universities that offer the degree in oral hygiene, a small number of oral hygienists is trained, the division is small and part of the dental school, and there are limited posts available in the public health sector [59]. Dental students were particularly dissatisfied with their teaching facilities (Table 4), suggesting the need for improvements.

In previous national needs assessments performed in Denmark, the key opinion leaders were identified according to their significant roles in the local, regional, and national planning and implementation of residency training programs in the specialty. They were identified through the national health and medicine authority, and the medical/surgical societies. There were thirty three experts that were invited as key opinion leaders in a needs assessment performed in vascular surgery (Nayahangan et al. 2017). They represented different roles such as postgraduate clinical associate professors, heads of departments, heads of clinical education and training, conveners of mandatory courses for residency training, the board members of the society, and professors. The board members of the society for vascular surgeons in training were also included to have a representation from the junior doctors. In contrast, a needs assessment performed in radiology, which is comparatively a bigger specialty, had ninety-three key opinion leaders representing the same groups (Nayahangan et al. 2018).

Sixty participants (29.4%) were assistant professors, 74 (36.3%) were associate professors, and 25 (12.3%) were professors. Forty-five (22%) participants identified by a range of other position titles, which included adjunct professor, clinical assistant professor, clinical associate professor, core faculty, or other designations. Eighty six percent (n = 176) of the participants had more than 5 years of experience as a human service educator, the majority (n = 174, 85.3%) in social work. Twenty-five participants (12.3%) identified their discipline as counseling. A majority (n = 163, 79.9%) reported having doctoral degrees.
