6.00: Early concept development

Once she can sit up well, seated activity centres are good, because they don’t require a refined touch to elicit an audible response. Choose one with a variety of textures and sounds – you may need to demonstrate the activities that are not immediately in front of your child, because with low vision she may not realise they are there. Don’t be tempted to use a sit-in baby walker instead. They do not assist with walking, but help infants to reach things that are beyond their understanding and/or dangerous. It is all too easy for a baby walker to tip over due to even a small change in terrain, including toys on the floor. A suitable supportive alternative might be a Bumbo floor seat. These provide back support, along with more secure sitting, and can accommodate a tray.

The items ‘feeling qualified or inadequate as a parent’, ‘having a child makes it necessary for me have a job’ and ‘being responsible for a needy and demanding baby’ had a slight loading on ‘fear and worries of parenthood’, ‘parental stress’ and ‘negatives of childcare’ factors, and were therefore removed from the final model. In this study, none of participants expressed concerns about inadequacy as a parent in raising children and fulfilling their needs, as they relied on the family support for rearing children and financial support. One aspect of the latter is related to the financial support offered by the couple’s family in form of Sismouni (gifts offered by parents when the first child is born). In Iranian culture context, Sismouni provides the basic needs of a child including a stroller, baby walker, etc. Also, in Iranian culture, there are a number of proverbs such as; ‘God provides the livelihood’, ‘One should not be worried about the costs of raising a child’ and ‘One who gives teeth to a baby will give his/her aliment too’.
