Antacids
Published in Charles Theisler, Adjuvant Medical Care, 2023
Antacids are medications that neutralize acid in the stomach. They are frequently used to treat heartburn or indigestion. Antacids such as Tums, Di-Gel, Dulcolax, Mylanta, etc., are different from acid reducers or block ers. Aluminum hydroxide gel in antacids (e.g., Equate) can combine with phosphorus to form a complex that is excreted in the feces. This is a valuable feature for reducing phosphate levels in hyperphosphatemia. However, aluminum-containing antacids can precipitate, leading to decreased absorption of vitamin A.1
Nutritional and Dietary Supplementation during Pregnancy
Published in “Bert” Bertis Britt Little, Drugs and Pregnancy, 2022
Antacids are classified based on their content: aluminum, calcium, magnesium, magaldrate, sodium bicarbonate, and combinations of any of these. Antacids are the most common over-the-counter and prescribed gastrointestinal medications used by pregnant women. Combinations of aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are used in popular commercial preparations (e.g., Maalox, Mylanta, Riopan, and Gelusil). Calcium carbonate is also a very popular antacid (e.g., Tums, Titralac, Rolaids, and Chooz).
Thyroid surgery

Thyroid surgery can be performed safely in most cases on an outpatient basis. Our practice is to obtain a parathyroid hormone level in the recovery room after total thyroidectomy to help predict temporary hypocalcemia. If this level is low, we prescribe oral calcium carbonate tablets (Tums©) with or without calcitriol. Calcium and PTH levels are then checked 2 weeks after surgery.

TUMS is one of the leading universities in Iran. However, there is no role modeling specific program in this university. In this study, a three-month role modeling program was developed based on the exposure phase of the ‘Positive Doctor Role Modeling’ framework (Passi and Johnson 2016b). This phase describes the attributes of positive role models. Also, a literature review was conducted to identify the corresponding contents, structure, and teaching methods (Mohammadi, Shahsavari, et al. 2019), and the educational program was then finalized in an expert panel. The learning objectives of the program included promoting effective role modeling strategies among clinical educators, familiarizing them with the characteristics of good role modeling (including clinical teaching skills and personality characteristics), improving their knowledge about the prerequisites of role modeling, and strategies for role modeling self-promotion. In this program, we supported the professional development of clinical educators by promoting their self-awareness of being a role model and making their implicit actions more explicit. The program was implemented through four two-hour workshops and distance sessions for the clinical educators of this university. For distance sessions, a number of video clips and podcasts were provided at specified intervals. In addition, after each online session, a few studies on the corresponded topic were presented. Moreover, the participants were required to reflect on their daily experiences as a role model and then were asked to discuss in the online forum.
Purtscher-Like Retinopathy Secondary to Medication Induced Calcium-Alkali Syndrome and Acute Pancreatitis in a Pregnant Female

On further questioning, the patient reported consumption of over 12 tablets of calcium carbonate (TUMS®) in the past 24 hours for symptoms of GERD and nausea. In the context of the patient’s hypercalcemia, acute kidney injury, and metabolic alkalosis, a diagnosis of medication-induced calcium-alkali syndrome causing acute pancreatitis was established. Other causes of hypercalcemia were ruled out with normal levels of parathyroid hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and vitamin D.

Forty-eight adult male Balb/c inbred mice weighing 20 to 22 gr were provided from the Physiology Department at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). Animals were kept in a temperature-controlled environment with a 12:12 light/dark cycle with free access to food and water. All procedures were according to the guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals of TUMS (Research ethics approval ID: IR.TUMS.MEDICINE.REC.1399.651).
