with one overall negative charge, which, depending on the resonance form, can be located over the central or one of the peripheral atoms. Cations of high charge density (or small radius) polarize the triiodide ion to a greater extent by increasing the negative charge localization near the cation, and thus decrease its stability.190 The dissociation equilibrium shown in Equation 1 illustrates the chemical basis of the use of triiodide as an iodinating agent.
Pendred’s Syndrome: Association of Congenital Deafness with Sporadic Goiter

Yamamoto and colleagues53 described increased TPO activity by the triiodide method in an 8-year-old deaf hypothyroid boy with a 46% discharge of radioiodine after thiocyanate administration. The thyroid gland had a quite low stable iodine content and an increased ratio of mono- and diiodotyrosine (ΜΓΓ+DIT) to iodothyronines. The increased TPO activity for iodide organification was attributed to the high serum TSH levels. A possible “coupling defect” was suggested as the cause of the defective thyroid hormone synthesis.
Next-generation technology starts with iodine

The iodine adsorption resin used here is a combination of triiodide ions and an anion exchange resin (refer to Section 12). The mechanism of bacteria elimination is that the iodine adsorption resin (positive ion state) draws and adsorbs mold and bacteria in the air and water (negative ion state), and the iodine seeping out from the resin surface sterilizes it instantly. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authorized the use of this iodine adsorption resin for the drinking water purification system, and this system has been used in all space shuttles up to now. In addition, the Pentagon has also approved its use for water bottles carried by military personnel. In many countries around the world, this iodine adsorption resin is incorporated in water purification systems to procure clean and safe water in cases of disasters and in areas where humanitarian aid is provided [61a,b].

The oxidative protein damage was evaluated by measuring AOPP levels. The samples (40 μL PNS of 1:10 diluted sample and 160 μL of 0.2 mol/L citric acid) were pipetted into the microplate wells. In addition, reagent blank (190 μL of 0.2 mol/L citric acid and 10 μL of 1.16 mol/L KI) and standards (190 μL chloramine-T (0–100 μmol/L in 0.2 mol/L citric acid) and 10 μL of 1.16 mol/L KI) were pipetted in different wells. After 2 min, absorbances were read at 340 nm against reagent blank. Results were standardised by the formation of triiodide ion on the oxidation of potassium iodide with chloramine-T. Results were expressed as chloramine-T equivalent (Hanasand et al.2012).

To assess the AOPP levels, microplate wells were filled with diluted liver homogenates and 0.2 M citric acid, and after two minutes of incubation, absorbances of samples and standards were read at 340 nm against a reagent blank [13]. The formation of triiodide ion when potassium iodide is oxidized with chloramine-T was used to standardize the findings. The results are given in mmol/chloramine-T equivalents.
