Amblyopia, also called "lazy eye," is the term for dullness of vision resulting from lack of use of an eye. Anopia denotes the lack of vision, particularly in one eye.

ICD-10 Version 2015 (8) classifies visual field defects. It comprises of the enlarged blind spot, generalized contraction of the visual field, hemianopsia (heteronymous) (homonymous), quadrant anopsia, and scotoma: Arcuate, Bjerrum, Central, and Ring (Illustration 13.4).

The average overall complication rate detected in our cohort was low compared to the previously reported rate [36,37]. Permanent severe post-operative complications and temporary severe complications in 0.4% and 4.8%, respectively. Interestingly, nearly similar percentage were reported by Mathon et al. in their recent report about complications in 389 temporal lobe surgeries [22]. Post-operative permanent visual field defects as incomplete contralateral upper quadrant anopia mostly unnoticed by the patients occurred in 24.2%, which is in the lower reported range of recent investigations focusing on that topic of visual field disturbances detected in up to 73% after temporal lobe surgery [38–40]. Incidence of hemianopia (1.3%) was rather low, which is also in good concordance with the literature [37].

Orbital complications exhibit various symptoms of lid edema, ophthalmalgia, diplopia, ocular motility disorder, vision deterioration, and so on. In the present study, although all patients were fortunately recovered without subsequent complication, prompt and appropriate treatment is necessary to avoid serious complications such as anopsia. The limited movements of the eyeball and weaken vision have been reported not to improve rapidly with conservative treatment [10]. Although patients with proptosis and/or limitation of extraocular movements are reported to be associated with the presence of an abscess [11], only one (25.0%) of four patients with ocular motility disorder showed abscess formation in the present study. Our study showed no significant difference in the duration of recovery between cases with and without each symptom.

Eligibility criteria for participants were as follows: sex of the children (both male and female), age range between 9 and 14 years, and type of amblyopia. As a criterion for the impact, we referred to the BCVA <0.8 in each amblyopic eye measured by single optical characters. Patients suffering from amblyopia ex anopsia with astigmatism were chosen, which is in line with our partial goal of examining the effects of meridional amblyopia. Patients who did not meet the visual acuity criteria or had a history of strabismus surgery were excluded from the study. No important changes to the eligibility criteria were adopted after trial commencement.
