An unusual cause of “traumatic” hemothorax: perforation of the lung parenchyma by a bifid rib

The patient underwent a two-port video assisted thoracic surgery (Figure 2). The hematoma was removed, the thoracic cavity was cleansed and the bifid rib was resected at its base. Two drains were left in place and managed with suction for three days. The patient had an uncomplicated recovery as the drains were removed on day three and day four postoperatively with reassuring imaging. He was discharged four days after the operation with continuation of broad spectrum antibiotics for 14 days post-discharge.
