It is known that surgery or even examination of the anal canal may be associated with transient bacteremia. Diathermic hemorrhoidectomy causes thermal injury and may facilitate translocation of bacteria through the bowel wall. A study of Maw et al (BJS, 2002) shows a trend for higher rates of transient bacteremia in stapled hemorrhoidectomy, than in diathermic hemorrhoidectomy [7].
