Silicates such as actapulgite or diosmectite have hydrophilic action, can absorb or fix a large number of molecules such as bacterial toxins and may influence production of glycoproteins in the mucus. Controlled studies with diosmectite [17] and actapulgite [18] confirm these effects. Nevertheless, diosmectide did not change global stool output. Therefore, current data suggest that absorbants may change the presentation of stools without reducing the loss of liquid and electrolytes.

After randomization, there were eight patients in the control group (TADS) and seven patients in the experimental group (TAD-LAN). One patient in the TAD-LAN group did not receive the experimental treatment as expected. In the per-protocol analysis, there were nine patients in the control group and six patients in the experimental group. No adverse events were described. Diosmectite and loperamide chloride administration was similar between the two groups. The baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups (Table 1). The cohort was composed of a majority of men (79%) and had a median age of 64 years old [28; 81]. The mean number of days with HOS before inclusion was different between the TADS and TAD + LAN groups: 7 (±7) vs 33 (±52) days, respectively. Forty-three percent of patients presented clinical dehydration signs (Table 2).
