This is also the foundation for the Kamasutra's medication recommendations. According to Indian literature, Ashwini Kumars, a heavenly physician, made the “chyawanprash” from safed musli for Chyavanrishi, who married at the age of 80, to improve sexuality. Other traditional Indian works, such as the Bhavaprakash Nighantu, Rajendra Sarsangrah, and Raja Ballabh Nighantu, identified C. borivilianum as “Vajikaran”.There are 30–35 herbal medicines with “Rasayana”characteristics, especially C. borivilianum, listed in several Ayurvedic and Siddha treatises. Sushruta described Rasayana as a remedy that slows down the aging process (Vayasthapam), extends life (Ayushkaram), improves knowledge (Medha), and strengthens the body (Ayushkaram) (Bala) (Pushpangadan et al., 2012).C. borivilianum roots have long been used to treat impotency and oligospermia in males, and they're also a sort of immunomodulator (Kothari and Singh, 2004; Puri, 2003; Sharma et al., 1999; Tandon and Shukla, 1995; Triveni, 1977).
An Ayurvedic Approach for Healthy Ageing
Published in Goh Cheng Soon, Gerard Bodeker, Kishan Kariippanon, Healthy Ageing in Asia, 2022
Rasayana, a treasure of Ayurveda, has its importance in promoting longevity and healthy ageing. Rasayana is defined as a drug that destroys Jara/ageing [16]. Thus, any measure that delays ageing promotes health and longevity is termed as Rasayana, but a purification of the body (Panchkarma) is an essential pre-requisite for the administration of Rasayana (Rejuvenation therapy). Rejuvenation can only be possible if all the channels of the body remain free from any obstruction or toxins.

Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs of Ayurveda used for millennia as a “Rasayana” for its wide-ranging health benefits. “Rasayana” is described as a preparation that promotes a youthful state of physical and mental health and expands happiness. These types of remedies are given to small children as tonics and are also taken by the middle-aged and elderly to increase longevity. The Charaka Samhita, a Sanskrit text on Ayurveda, classifies ashwagandha as Balya, a promoter of strength (Dev et al., 2006). It is also used as a general energy-increasing tonic known as “Medhya Rasayana” (promotes learning and memory function) and in geriatric problems (Nadkarni et al., 1976). The root of the plant has been traditionally used for health benefits (Williamson, 2002).

It is considered as an important herbal Rasayana and known as “Sattvic Kapha Rasayana.” Rasayana is herbal or metallic preparation that is used for various pharmacologic properties such as/in aphrodisiac, adaptogenic, diuretic, anti-helminthic, astringent, tonic, narcotic, immuno-stimulation, anti-inflammation, anti-stress, anti-ulcer, rejuvenative, rheumatism, goiter, boils, pimple, piles, flatulent colic, oligospermia, health promoter, leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, nervous breakdown, snake venom, and scorpion stings (Agarwal et al. 1999; Machiah et al. 2006; Machiah and Gowda 2006). Furthermore, W. somnifera is used for the clearing of white spots from the cornea and also used in anxiety, hysteria, syncope, and loss of memory. Ashwagandha is used for extreme weight loss in children. On the other hand, along with milk, it acts as tonic for children (Basu 1935; Bhandari 1970; Sharma et al. 1985; Misra 2004; Dar et al. 2015). Due to its distinct stress-busting qualities, the plant species achieves the name “somnifera,” which means “sleep-inducer” (Ven Murthy et al. 2010; Seenivasagam et al. 2011).

In Ayurveda, the general line of treatment of mental disorders is (1) non-pharmacological: Daivavyapashraya Chikitsa (spiritual healing or mantra therapy) and Satvavajaya Chikitsa (psychotherapy/counseling/yoga/meditation), and (2) pharmacological: Yuktivyapashraya Chikitsa (rationale therapy/medicinal treatment); which can be instrumental in the reduction of the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and can improve overall quality of life for such patients (Figure 3). Ayurveda suggests Nasya (nasal administration) for all the Urdhavajatrugataroga (diseases of head and neck) which may have beneficial therapeutic effect in the patients of AD [54,55]. These therapies are widely practiced in Ayurveda to manage the behavioral symptoms of AD like anger, aggression, depression, irritation, and wandering. Rasayana treatment in Ayurveda is aimed at increasing longevity, improving physical strength, enhancing the senses, improving physical appearance, improving language ability, and improving memory [56]. A regulated lifestyle, wholesome diet, emotional support, Rasayanas, and psychotherapies as quoted in Ayurveda [57] have been identified as the best strategies to prevent and manage AD and similar neurological disorders. Contemporary and Ayurvedic systems of medicine work through different principles. Synthetic drug therapy focuses on physical health by suppressing the signs and symptoms of a disease, gives temporary relief, and never appreciates to remove the disease causing factors, while Ayurvedic system works on holistic approach (takes care of physical, mental, spiritual, and social wellbeing), treats the cause of illness in the body by balancing the act of Tridosha; therefore the treatment is long lasting and certainly irreversible. Ayurvedic principles followed judiciously can offer proper management and treatment of AD.
