Balneotherapy and Hydrotherapy
Published in Mehwish Iqbal, Complementary and Alternative Medicinal Approaches for Enhancing Immunity, 2023
‘Peloid is a muddy dispersion or maturated mud with cosmetic and/or healing properties, made up of a compound blend of fine-powdered materials of biologic and/or geologic origins, seawater or mineral water, and commonly natural constituent from metabolic biological activity' (Gomes et al., 2013; Golušin et al., 2014). Lüttig proposed three principal categories of peloids, i.e. (i) peloid apogenes (material of peloid synthesised by mixing liquid carriers), (ii) eupeloids (undressed and original) and (iii) parapeloids (dressed, crushed and milled) (Gomes et al., 2013; Lüttig, 2006). Aside from skin disorders, peloid therapy is suggested for degenerative disorders, vasculopathy, chronic rheumatism, fractures and articular injuries (Figure 8.4).
Thermal Treatments in Postcancer Care
Published in Paloma Tejero, Hernán Pinto, Aesthetic Treatments for the Oncology Patient, 2020
Peloid therapy consists of mud used therapeutically, as part of balneotherapy, or therapeutic bathing (Figure 34.3). Peloids consist of humus and minerals formed over many years by geological and biological, chemical, and physical processes. The water-soluble peat substances pass transdermally in sufficient quantities to induce a biological effect; the “human skin possesses a selective permeability for the water-soluble fulvic and ulmic acids and derivative fraction isolated as peat extract” [18]. The bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities of humic acid have a positive effect on mucous membranes [19]. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects are key in postcancer patient treatment.

We searched in several electronic databases including PubMed, Ovid, web of science, Cochrane library, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (Pedro), CNKI, VIP, Wan Fang, Open Grey with the following search strategy: (ankylosing spondylitis) AND (balneotherapy OR hydrotherapy OR thalassotherapy OR spa therapy OR thermotherapy OR aquatic OR hydrogalvanic OR cryo OR pool exercise OR water-based OR pool-based OR Stanger OR mud OR thermal water OR bath OR peloid OR natural therapeutic gas OR radon). The search filter was used for RCTs. Hand search was also performed for articles included in previous systematic reviews. Studies published prior to April 2019 were searched. Two searchers independently reviewed titles and available abstracts to retrieve potentially relevant studies. Next, a third searcher identified the studies that need full-text reviews.

Desai et al. [127] assessed medial to lateral taping plus exercise program compared to exercise program alone and found statistically significant difference at 4 weeks (p = 0.000). Capan et al. [128] found no significant difference between radial shockwave therapy and sham intervention at 1 months (p = 0.425) and 3 months (p = 0.517). Ökmen et al. [130] compared peloid therapy plus lateral epicondylitis band to lateral epicondylitis band alone and found no statistically significant difference between groups at 2 weeks but found statistically significant difference at 6 weeks (p < 0.05). Upadhyay et al. [132] found statistically significant difference between progressive strengthening exercise plus conventional therapy and conventional therapy alone at 6 weeks (p = 0.0025). Nowotny et al. [134] found significant reduction in PRTEE score in dynamic extension wrist orthosis plus physiotherapy group but not in physiotherapy group alone at 12 weeks. Sethi et al. [135] found no statistically significant difference between scapular muscle strengthening plus conventional physiotherapy compared to conventional physiotherapy alone at 6 weeks (p = 0.95).Long-term (6 months - 1 year)
