Clinical manifestations: dyspnea, frequent asthma, or the need for mechanical ventilation, accompanied by dizziness, irritability, sweating, and cold limbs. Tongue appears dark purple, tongue mass is either thick and greasy or dry, and pulse is floating without root. Recommended prescription: 15 g ginseng, 10 g black prepared lateral root of aconite (decocted first), 15 g cornus officinalis, suhexiang pill, or angong niuhuang pill. If the patient has abdominal distension constipation or constipation symptoms, raw rhubarb or glaucoma 5–10 g can be used.Recommended Chinese patent medicine: xuebijing injection, reduning injection, tanreqing injection, xingnaojing injection, shenfu injection, shengmai injection, shenmai injection. Drugs with similar effects may be selected on an individual basis, or both may be used in combination with clinical symptoms. TCM injection can be used in combination with TCM decoction.

As previously discussed, glycation is a contributing factor to skin ageing, and many compounds have previously been identified as inhibitors of glycation. These compounds generally illustrate nucleophilicity. For example, aminoguanidine has been shown to be an excellent inhibitor and model for the inhibition of glycation. A study by Kim et al. (2012) aimed to investigate the ability of gold nanoparticles formed with aminoguanidine to inhibit glycation of collagen. The results found that the gold nanoparticles reduced the glycation of collaged by 56.3% compared to the control and reduced the distribution of AGEs in the lattice model (Kim et al. 2012). It has, however, been withdrawn from clinical trials due to concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of treatment. Natural inhibitors have, however, been isolated from herbal sources. In a study by Yazdanparast and Ardestani (2007)Cyperus rotundus (Figure 21.2f) was found to inhibit glycation in a model using fructose-mediated protein glycoxidation, an antioxidant and metal chelator. Other natural inhibitors of protein glycation include Morinda citrifolia, Cornus officinalis and Cornus mas (West et al. 2014).

Kochia scoparia (K. scoparia) is a large annual herb used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat head and neck and breast tumors (63, 100). Han et al. showed in 2016 that methanol extract from K. scoparia, mature fruit (MEKS) induced apoptosis of OSCC cells through caspase activation involving the p38 MAPK pathway, with an increase in sub-G1 accumulated cells and apoptotic bodies (100). Other Chinese herbal extracts obtained from Drynaria baronii, Angelica sinensis (AS), and Cornus officinalis have been reported to display diverse biological activities, including antioxidative (101), antioxidant (102), and anti-tumor activities (103,104). Chu et al. reported that these extracts have anti-tumor potential against human OSCC cell lines HSC-2, HSC-3, HSC-4, and Ca9-22 (82).

The efficacy of the five herbal mixtures constituting KH-204 is generally known as follows: Cornus Officinalis Sieb. Et Zucc had effect to bladder overactivity, diabetes and related diabetic nephropathy, neuroprotection, inflammation and erectile dysfunction [21–25]. Lycium chinense Mill. had benefit of hepatoprotection, antihypertensive effect, vision protection. Rubuscoreanus Migquel had anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant effects and erectile function [26–29]. Cuscutachinensis Lamark was characterized anti-oxidant activities [30,31]. Schizandra chinensis Baillon had beneficial effects for fatigue, diabetes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant [32,33]. Previous animal model studies reported that KH-204 activates the nitric oxide pathway and has a preventive effect on oxidative stress [34–36]. It is well known that antioxidant effect and activation of the nitric oxide pathway plays an important role in erectile dysfunction, which accounts for a large proportion of LOH-related symptoms.
Effects of Morroniside on the Viability of Random Skin Flaps in Rats

Morroniside, a major active ingredient extracted from Cornus officinalis, has anti-inflammation andanti-microbial effects.5 Previous studies have demonstrated that in addition to anti-oxidative and apoptotic biological activities, it can also protect the integrality of microvessel and restore disrupted homeostasis in neurovascular units.6 Morroniside has also been shown to improve microvascular circulation by promoting long-term angiogenesis and increasing blood flow velocity, thereby compensating for ischemia and necrosis after surgery.7 However, little is known concerning whether morroniside may be useful in improving the survival of random skin flaps. Based on its biological effects, the present study was undertaken to explore the feasibility of applying morroniside to incur an increased benefit in the survival of random skin flap in rats.
