Fasting blood samples were collected by a trained phlebotomist from the median antebrachial vein to determine the plasma glucose and serum lipid profile. Hypertriglyceridemia was classified as present if elevated triglycerides were equal to 2.0 mmol/l or above, or the participant was taking specific lipid-lowering therapy (ATC code C10). Participants were classified with reduced HDL-C when their biochemical results were less than 40 mg/dL for males or less than 50 mg/dL for females. Hyperglycemia was considered present if the fasting blood glucose was greater or equal to 5.6 mmol or the participant was on hypoglycemic agents (ATC code A10).
