The defect in the VUJ may be a primary disorder or may arise secondary to bladder dysfunction (neuropathic bladder, dyssynergic bladder) or bladder outlet obstruction (e.g. posterior urethral valve). The refluxing urine can fill the upper excretory system (ureters and renal pelvis) between and/or during micturition, and can sometimes penetrate into the renal substance (intrarenal reflux). The volume of refluxing urine can vary in the same patient at different times. Attempts to classify the degree of reflux are therefore of limited practical interest, as reflux may change in intensity in individual patients.

For students to understand the relationship between the digestive and excretory systems, it is important to systematically connect their existing knowledge about the digestive system to the excretory system rather than teaching these systems in isolation. Figure 4.3 clearly shows the connection that the teacher made between the digestive system and excretory system. What we learn from the decision and the action of the experimental teacher to teach both phenomena simultaneously and approach the study of excretion via the phenomenon of digestion is that the logical point of entry to a particular area of science and its interconnections should be kept in mind when planning to teach from a conceptual change perspective. In line with this indirect approach, the exploration task and questions should appropriately relate to learners’ experience (simple and sensory), such as the ones used in this study (i.e., eating sandwich and drinking water). Then students’ conceptions can be logically connected to a more complex phenomenon such as the cellular processes of excretion.

Data of DCE imaging were analyzed with OsiriX software (v3.8.1, Bernex, Switzerland) by plotting Gd-uptake curves to assess the efficiency of the perfusion in excised organs according to Buchs et al. [62]. In the liver, regions of interest (ROI) were drawn on the portal vein branches and the hepatic parenchyma. In the kidneys, ROI were drawn on the cortex and the medulla. For the medulla, the ROI must avoid the urinary excretory system and the hilum (internal limit). After plotting the post-injection signal enhancement curves, two features were evaluated to conclude on the viability of the kidneys [62]. These were the negative slope of perfusion in the cortex (in negative trigonometric degrees) and the time of arrival of the contrast agent bolus in the cortex, which should be shorter than the same parameter in the medulla.

The prepared bovine albumin nanoparticles exhibited slow drug-release properties and could penetrate the bone marrow-blood barrier to targeted focal vertebrae. The efficacy of these nanoparticles was significantly better than that of traditional anti-tuberculosis drug dosage forms. Compared to conventional preparations, these particles can reduce the amount of medication administered to once a week, and reduce damage to the liver, spleen, lungs, the hematopoietic system as well as to the excretory system. The slow drug release pattern leads to a long circulation time in the body, which improves the concentration and distribution of drugs in tissues and promotes chemotherapeutic compliance.

Essential health and sexuality education is missing in the school curriculum. Biology chapters in the textbooks (reproductive organs, menstruation, conception, contraception) contain technical language, inappropriate terms and inadequate explanations. For example, reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections find their place in the chapter on the excretory system (Gujarat State curriculum). Teachers expect the students to read these chapters on their own. Examination questions from these chapters are included as choice questions, giving the message that these topics are not important.
