Weldability

Weldability refers to the ability of a material to be welded successfully and perform as expected during its service life, under specific fabrication and design conditions. It is influenced by factors such as thermal conductivity, preheating, thermal expansion, alloying elements, surface cleanliness and oxide, shielding gas, joint design, welding position, precipitation hardenable copper alloys, hot cracking, and porosity. Weldability of a material is defined as its ability to be easily welded. The weldability of a material often depends on various factors including the following: (1) metallurgical changes that occur during the process of welding, (2) hardness, (3) evolution and absorption of gas, and (4) extent and/or severity of oxidation. Among the family of metals, the low carbon steels have the best weldability. The weldability reveals an observable decrease as the carbon content in steel increases.
