The most important factors used to classify fuel cells are the electrolytes employed in the cells and the choice of fuel. The main types of fuel cells are proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM); direct ethanol, formic acid, or methanol fuel cell (DEFC, DFAFC, DMFC); direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC); alkaline fuel cell (AFC); molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC); phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC); solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC); and proton ceramic fuel cell (PCFC) (Chen and Chen 2006; Kirubakaran, Jain, and Nema 2009).
