Well integrity

Well integrity refers to the set of standards and practices used to ensure that wells are constructed, maintained, and operated in a way that prevents the uncontrolled movement of fluids, solids, and gases into the surrounding environment. This involves the placement, maintenance, and testing of barriers throughout the life cycle of the well to reduce the risk of well control events and the release of formation fluids. The use of DVS in hydrocarbon production (as opposed to exploration) applications is related to performance, i.e. to optimising the flow from production intervals (as is the case for DTS), understanding the hydraulic fracturing process and ensuring that pumps, valves and other in-well devices are operating correctly. Well integrity relates mainly to unwanted leak paths, but also to avoiding problems caused by movement, e.g. compaction and subsidence.

The management of well integrity during well operations involves the placement, maintenance and testing of adequate barriers throughout the process, preventing the escalation of a well control event (International Association of Drilling Contractors, 2015). Table 1 presents the relationship between the operational barriers and the previously mentioned four drilling phases of well construction.
