Drilling and sampling techniques

Figure 12.4 shows the setup of a water well rotary rig. The rig is mounted on the back of a lorry and the mast raised using hydraulics. The rotational drive to the drill string is provided by either: a top-drive unit where a hydraulic motor is located on top of the drill string, as in Figure 12.4, or a rotary table where the weight of a top-drive assembly would be unstable, as shown in Figure 12.10.

A top drive applies rotary power to the top of the drill pipe and advances down or up as the drill pipe is moved in or out of the hole. A swivel is mounted on top to inject the flushing media inside the drill pipe.

Rotary drilling system, or more generally drilling rig, consists of three main functional equipment: the lifting, the rotation, and the pumping equipment. The classification of drilling rigs is at first approach by the maximum drilling depth capability. So, each drilling rig is designed to drill in a given depth range. Rotary drilling system is composed of different mechanical and electrical parts; the most important part of such systems is the Top Drive (Figure 1(a)). The Top Drive is a motorized injection head which, in addition to the injection of mud, ensures the rotation of the drill string (Figure 1(b)). Thus, neither the drive rod nor the rotary table is obligatory to rotate the packing; it is the Top Drive that ensures it [7].

Well drilling is the most adequate way to exploit oil and gas. The drilling rig is mainly composed of two parts: the higher part of the drill string includes a rotary table driven by an electrical motor which is responsible for the driving torque. This last one is transmitted to the lower part via the drill pipes. The lower part of drilling rig is called drill string and is mainly composed of drill collars and drill bit. The main role of drill collars is to provide the proper WOB. The drill-bit is a rock breaking tool. Figure 1 presents the main components of the drilling rig. The drill string's main role is to transmit the rotation from the top drive table to the drill bit in order to elaborate the down hole drilling process.
