Keratophyre

Keratophyre is a type of metamorphic rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar, and is often found in association with other rocks such as muscovite schist, granophyre, quartzite, and chert. Pre-Tertiary rocks outcrop in the northern and northwestern part of the region. They are represented by Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks (Gemericum and Veporicum) of varied lithological types (gneiss, migmatite, granodiorite, breccia, conglomerate, sandstone, shale, quartzite, limestone, dolomite, phyllite, diabase, keratophyre, rhyolite, dacite, tuff and tuffite, magnesite and amphibolite).

The Carboniferous alkali feldspar granites in the South Qinling ore district host the carbonate-type REY. The position of these occurrences is controlled by second-order faults splaying off first-order faults in the Zhushan–Miaoya, Zhushan–Shaxiongdong and Guochang areas (Figure 9). The Miaoya prospect is hosted in a carbonatite–syenite complex (Xu, Kynicky, et al., 2010; Xu, Wang, et al., 2010), which intruded along the fault belt between the schist of the lower Silurian Meiziya Group and the Proterozoic meta-quartz keratophyre of the lower Neoproterozoic (Nh2y) Yaolinghe Group of the Nahua Formation. Concentrations of REY, Ba, Sr and other elements in the prospect are relatively high, similar to concentrations at other large REY deposits such as those at Maoniuping and Dalucao. However, the Miaoya prospect is of a lower grade than these other deposits, which suggests that not all fertile carbonatites produce viable REY deposits (Zhang et al., 2019).
