In this vein, it is essential to define what is meant by CAVs. Moore and Zuby (2013) outlined a system for classifying vehicular automation Level 1–4: Level 0, No automation; Level 1, Function-specific automation where vehicle assists driver in controlling the vehicle; Level 2, Combined function automation where vehicle automates at least two primary control functions; Level 3, Limited self-driving automation where driver cedes full control to vehicle automation under certain traffic or environmental conditions; Level 4, Full self-driving automation where vehicle is designed to perform all driving functions. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International also provide a similar but 5-level definition for CAVS where the middle levels are further detailed.
