Published in The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology, 2018
Ken Pointon, Andre Pointon
To start the engine from cold the main water tank is topped up and then the cistern is filled with the hand water pump. Following this the boiler is half filled with water and the fire is set and lit. While steam is being raised the main beam trunnion bearings and parts of the valve gear are oiled, the piston and lead piston weights are fitted into the cylinder and the piston top water added. As the engine is not used every day, the piston is removed to prevent it rusting the cast Iron cylinder and is stored in a bucket of water keeping the leather piston seal hydrated.
