Pre-echo

Pre-echo refers to a weak but annoying sound that occurs when an additional sound wave arrives at the receiver position before the sound wave from the focused source does. This can happen when sound energy travels faster in solid structures than in the air, causing the sound to arrive at a listener or microphone before the direct sound path arrives. Adaptive block length ATC performs linear transform on multiple samples. Usually a larger block length results in a higher resolution, thus improving the coding quality. However, when adopting a large block length in an area where the signal amplitude rises rapidly, a preceding echo, called a pre-echo, is generated. This is because, while the quantizing distortion by coding is distributed evenly in a unit block, the distortion is more clearly perceived where the signal amplitude is small.

Figure 4 is a schematic diagram of the audio encoder of the new pre-echo processing scheme proposed in this paper. The original audio signal is input to the pre-echo decision module and the audio preprocessing module. In general, the pre-echo decision module may be designed to detect and classify pre-echo artifacts in the input audio signal. Pre-echo artifacts can occur in audio coding systems due to the use of certain coding techniques and can result in perceptual distortion and reduced audio quality. The pre-echo decision module may use a combination of signal processing techniques, such as time-frequency analysis and psychoacoustic modeling, to detect and classify pre-echo artifacts in the input audio signal.
