Motor Frame Design
Published in Wei Tong, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing of Electric Motors, 2022
In order to achieve high strength and long lifetime of a bolted joint, it is critical to set appropriate bolt tightening torque. Excessive tightening of bolts can cause thread damage or bolted joint failure, and insufficient tightening may lead to separation of jointed members or poor motor performance (such as large vibration). Many surveys have shown that among the possible causes of bolted assembly failure, the most frequent cause is poor assembly. Improper and irregular bolt tightening alone accounts for over 30% of all assembly failures and 45% of all fatigue incidents [5.29].
Torque Control of Bolt Preload
Published in John H. Bickford, An Introduction to the Design and Bchavior of Bolted Joints, 2018
Remember that a bolted joint is a mechanism for creating a force, the clamping force designed to hold two or more pieces of a structure or product together. That being the case, anything which affects or helps determine that clamping force must be of interest to a conscientious bolted-joint designer. And the type of control we use at assembly is certainly such a factor.
Bolt preload monitoring based on percussion sound signal and convolutional neural network (CNN)
Published in Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation, 2022
A bolted joint, as a means to connect different structural components [1,2], has the advantages of low cost and easy installation, and importantly they are re-usable. As a result, bolted joints have been widely used in many engineering fields [3,4]. However, most bolted joints are made of steel, which can be corroded [5,6]. In addition, during their services, bolted joints are subject to vibrations and thermal cycling, causing the reduction of the preload [7–9]. The decrease of the preload reduces a bolt’s bearing capacity, and, if not detected in a timely manner, may cause catastrophic structural failure. Therefore, the detection of decrease of bolt preload is paramount to ensure the safe operation of the bolt connection.

Among these types of fixations, bolting is undoubtedly the most used. Given its importance in mechanical engineering, bolting represents a certain economic feature. This type of assembly has an interesting advantage in the sense of implementation. In addition, the use of a bolted joint allows the maintenance of a mechanical system easier such as a defective component can be replaced and repaired without completely dismantling the structure. Furthermore, this mode of fixation allows easy transport and delivery of components.
