Hermann-Mauguin notation

Hermann–Mauguin notation is a system of notation used in crystallography to describe the symmetry of individual molecules and the relationship between different molecules in space. It was introduced by Hermann-Mauguin and is sometimes referred to as the Hermann-Mauguin notation. Two forms of symmetry notation are in common use. The Schoenflies notation is useful for describing the symmetry of individual molecules. The Hermann–Mauguin notation can be used to describe the symmetry of individual molecules; additionally, it is also used to describe the relationship between different molecules in space—their so-called space symmetry—and so it is the form most commonly met in the solid state. We shall therefore concentrate on the Hermann–Mauguin notation.

The point symmetry group of the achiral uniaxial smectic A phase is in international notation (also called Hermann–Mauguin notation) or , in Schöenflies notation. This point symmetry group corresponds to the symmetry of a cylinder and is the same as that of the achiral uniaxial nematic phase. An achiral biaxial (b) smectic Ab is described by the symmetry of a rectangle parallelepiped: in the international notation, which is in Schöenflies notation.
